Load Shedding Systems

As load demands of a building increase, there may be logistical, planning or environmental restrictions on installing new or larger generators, and a load-shed system can offer a lower cost solution.

There are two situations where an automatic load-shedding operation is necessary:

  • Where energy savings are desired at pre-determined times or conditions.
  • Where generators are used to provide backup should your building suffer from a mains supply failure.

RFL load shedding systems maximize the use of the generator power available to extend the useful life of the building for your business. It distributes power to those areas deemed business critical and reduces power to remaining areas of the business. It also introduces time delays to control the take- up of generator power and so protect the generator and other electrical equipment.

The RFL load shedding system is fitted with a touch screen to allow configuration to your requirements and can be supplied to fit your particular requirements.

For energy saving applications the configurable items are:

  • Factors required to instigate the load shed, such as time/date periods, load values, etc.
  • The items possible to be shed, together with a priority level for each.
  • Arrangements for manual over-ride.

For Generator load shedding systems a load shed system may be required to operate when:

  • The capacity of the generators in the building have been reached or exceeded
  • Priorities  must be set  to make the most effective use of limited generator power
  • Loading or re-loading generators must be made incrementally to avoid step load demands.
  • For landlords, we can manage the generator supplies to their tenants' especially multi-tenanted building and estates, where generator supply attracts an added premium.

During a power failure period a building is relying totally on generator power, so the reliability of any automatic switching operations is a major concern.  Using a single control system with no fault tolerance may pose a high risk to the business concerned.
